The Pokagon Area Folk Music Collective is an abstract idea rather than a concrete, defined entity. Anyone who wishes or imagines himself to be a member, or who participates in a Collective activity, is a member, by that virtue alone. My role is simply to facilitate and catalyze connections and ideas that bring people and music together. More specifically, I neither have nor will I accept operational or financial responsibilities beyond promoting this vision. Whatever happens in the course of Collective get-togethers is entirely the responsibility of individual parties enjoying themselves on equal footing.

VISION: The First Chorus

PRESENTLY, more than anything, the Pokagon Area Folk Music Collective is a set of possibilities (use your imagination) rooted in the following:
  • MOST FOLK – at least most folk I know, do not drink in nearly enough genuine, heart-felt, live music, for multiple reasons.

    • How many back-in-the-day musicians have abandoned their instruments?
    • And then those who think even today “Maybe I should try…” but never do?
    • And the many (most?) who stopped singing after grade school music class?
    • And all the genuine present-day musicians who would really enjoy playing more, but can’t find suitable venues or accompaniment?
    • And the majority who will never play but still would love to hear and share more LIVE music instead of the radio,  TV’s Voice etc, if only it were more accessible?
  • BUT POKAGON’S MANY SHELTERS, picnic areas, grassy fields (even an amphitheater!) offer wonderful venues spring through fall…
  • NOT TO MENTION other public parks, and even our own back yards and homes, if we would just loosen up a little!
  • AND WE MIGHT ALL find accompaniment for whatever it is we want (playing, singing along, listening, and maybe even dancing!) per this Folk Music Collective, assuming you enjoy folk genres – and you WILL if you gave it a chance. Folk music encompasses far more than most non-musicians know [we include "roots music"], so let’s get together and give it a try!

HOW WILL THIS WORK?

It’s easy.

 Step 1:

Generate awareness and interest. Share this on Facebook, per email, word of mouth, and by clicking on the Chief Leopold Pokagon graphic link above for 8.5 x 11 flyers to leave with businesses, musicians, friends, your hair-dresser, etc.

Step 2:

When you share per Facebook (by pasting this blog’s address [www.pokagonareafolkmusiccollective.blogspot.com] into a Facebook status, make sure to add some words of your own encouraging friends to seriously consider the idea and to share if they like.

Step 3:

As more people begin to consider these possibilities together online, it will begin to happen – people WILL begin to come together musically in new ways. And this is the beginning of the Collective!



Who knows? Maybe Pokagon, built by the WPA in the 1930's depression, a seminal era in folk, will embrace this notion in a big way - offering a meeting room, sanctioning and promoting concerts, allowing us to post event flyers at the Potawatami Inn, hosting jam sessions that will mix locals with Park tourists?

 So many folk passing through, so much music that might be played and heard…

 And don't forget to monitor the side-bar links for info about upcoming events that we, the Collective, which includes you, will dream up!
